September 2024 - Game releases
This September is seeing quite a few PC releases, as the start of autumn and soon to be winter so it’s a great time for some new games. I’m actually quite overwhelmed with the amount of games coming out so I figured I’d make a list of what really stands out in both games I’d love to try and games I am dubious about.
The Casting of Frank Stone
- Release Date: September 3
- Steam Link
The developers behind Until Dawn make an attempt at a single player horror experience in the world of Dead by Daylight. I really like the idea behind this and hope it lives up to it’s expectations - I’m a sucker for horror games after all.
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions
- Release Date: September 3
- Steam Link
Finally, the reason we didn’t see Quidditch in Hogwart’s Legacy is upon us. Quidditch champions let’s you play Quidditch with and against other folks online. It remains to be seen whether it lives up to the original 2003 Quidditch World Cup PS2 game.
Star Trucker
- Release Date: September 3
- Steam Link
- 🎮 Gamepass Day 1 Confirmed
I’m always amazed at how big the trucking sim games have become and here’s an interesting twist on the genre. Star Trucker takes trucking sims to the stars! This could turn out to be a lot of fun and I’m curious to see how seriously they take it.
Age of Mythology: Retold
- Release Date: September 4
- Steam Link
- 🎮 Gamepass Day 1 Confirmed
At long last we see the Age of Mythology Retold. Age of Empires with the powers of the pantheons (not just Wololo). I’m keen to play this, if only to relive my youth a bit.
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2
- Release Date: September 9
- Steam Link
This is probably the biggest release being talked about in my social circles. The original Space Marine had fun gameplay and a great story all placed alongside the power trip of being an actual Astartes Space Marine. The sequel promises more of the same with new flashier graphics and coop-capable campaign, what more could you ask for? The early reviews have been favourable as well.
What the Car?
- Release Date: September 9
- Steam Link
Based on the trailer for What the Car? I feel like I both do and do not know what the game is about. Suffice to say, I’m keen to try this “just an ordinary car game”. After all, who doesn’t want to go racing in a car with legs?
DeathSprint 66
- Release Date: September 12
- Steam Link
This looks like a Fallguys clone but in a more futuristic setting. It might not be my type of game but I can see the appeal. If you haven’t already done so, check out Speedrunners.
Reka
- Release Date: September 12
- Steam Link
This looks like a cosy crafting survival game with the twist being that you’re a witch, out to build your own chicken legged hut and learn new spells. Could be a lot of fun, I’ll definitely give it a go.
Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown
- Release Date: September 12
- Steam Link
I’ll be honest, I am still suffering from Forza Horizon 5 fatigue, a game that treats you like a driving super star from day 1. I enjoyed the old Test Drive Unlimited games way back when, but I’m more a fan of CarRPG games, where you have to work your way up in the world with a little banger to either some form of super car or a really fast version of your banger.
This might appeal to some though and it’s great to see a return from the series.
Wild Bastards
- Release Date: September 12
- Steam Link
If you’ve played Void Bastards, this might be right up your alley. Void Bastards was a rogue-like FPS game with a really fun setting, some great gameplay, and excellent art style (if you’re into that sort of thing), as such I have high hopes for Wild Bastards, as it is touting to be the spiritual successor to it’s Void counterpart.
Edge of Sanity
- Release Date: September 13
- Steam Link
A Cthulu-inspired, 2D, lovecraftian survival horror game. I really like the artistic style they chose for this, alongside the playable character struggling with his own sanity. I’ll definitely give it a try.
Final Fantasy 16
- Release Date: September 17
- Steam Link
This is probably big news for many people out there. I haven’t played a Final Fantasy game since VIII and I wouldn’t even know where to pick up the series now. I can’t help but be amazed at the staying power of the series though and this one even has a demo available on Steam.
The Plucky Squire
- Release Date: September 17
- Steam Link
I had to mention this as Plucky Squire has an original sounding synopsis where storybook characters learn about a 3D world outside their the pages of their book.
Enotria: The Last Song
- Release Date: September 18
- Steam Link
We’ve seen quite a few “souls-like” games recently, some folks even make a living of playing new and obscure ones. Enotria is set in Italian folklore and has some stunning visuals.
God of War Ragnarök
- Release Date: September 19
- Steam Link
Almost 2 years after it’s Playstation release, fans of the original are finally treated to the long Ragnarök expansion. I never properly finished the first one but maybe I’ll finally go do it. It should be noted that this will require a PSN login - a sticking point for many out there (as we saw with the Helldivers 2 fiasco).
Frostpunk 2
- Release Date: September 20
- Steam Link
- 🎮 Gamepass Day 1 Confirmed
If you played the original, you’ll know how grim Frostpunk can be but that doesn’t detract from the gameplay and how well done it was. I’ll look forward to this if only to see what new mechanics they bring.
Tiny Glade
- Release Date: September 23
- Steam Link
I played the demo for this during the last NextFest and it was very relaxing. Not dissimilar to Townscaper, all you do is build your little castle or village or manor in a glad and slowly customise it to your liking. There is no objective, no combat, no way to go wrong.
Zoochosis
- Release Date: September 23
- Steam Link
I’m a sucker for psychological horror games and this is definitely on my list. You have to go around identifying infected animals, make a vaccine and cure them.
Ara: History Untold
- Release Date: September 24
- Steam Link
- 🎮 Gamepass Confirmed (not Day 1 confirmed yet)
Could this be the 4X game to hold us over until the new Civilization hits our hard drives? It certainly looks pretty and combat seems very engaging. I enjoy a good civ-builder and considering this will be releasing on Gamepass it’s easy enough to try it out.
Greedfall 2: The Dying World
- Release Date: September 24
- Steam Link
The one thing I loved about the original Greedfall was the gunpowder + fantasy setting, however as an RPG it felt rather shallow and the gameplay loop became dull quickly. The sequel touts a deeper RPG experience which might make it worth trying out.
Breachway
- Release Date: September 26
- Steam Link
I am in no way fond of deck building games, I can appreciate some of their nuance but I rarely enjoy them. With that being said, I did enjoy the Breachway demo and as such felt the need to note it in this list. I haven’t seen many spaceship dog-fighting deck-builders out there, so maybe for some folks this is exactly what they’ve been waiting for.
Starfield: Shattered Space
- Release Date: September 30
- Steam Link
I almost didn’t want to add this to the list. I recently tried picking up Starfield again and it still did little to pull me in and I put it down again an hour later. I don’t speak for everyone and I’m sure some folks out there enjoyed the mess of broken promises, so they might be glad to know there is an expansion coming with new gear, new missions, new micro-transaction content (they showcased this, I’m not kidding).
I don’t know, I feel like Bethesda doesn’t deserve any money from us, I was happy to try Starfield as my Gamepass subscription was just sitting there anyway, but you will have to pay for this expansion to play it.
Final Words
This is not an exhaustive list, there are several more games coming out, but these are the ones that stood out to me. They make me eyeball both wallet and my busy schedule but I will definitely try and get to to as many of them as I can.
Go vote for the next one you’d like to see me play on the WLTPLR YouTube channel.
